Charleston Latin at Stella Niagara
For more than 10 years Stella Niagara Education Park has used Charleston Latin in grades 4 and 5 for vocabulary acquisition and enhancement. This program has successfully been integrated into the ELA program, but has been an essential part of science, math, social studies, and all manner of general knowledge in our students. Our students have explored the Roman culture and its profound effect that culture had on our current government, art, history, architecture and of course language.
Our students use their knowledge of Latin to disseminate English and Spanish words that may be unfamiliar, giving them a reliable resource in their work and eventually on high school entrance exams and later studies.
Research confirms learning is stronger when the learner can understand connections across curriculum. Charleston Latin establishes patterns in learning for our students.
Numerous alumni have returned to Stella over the years and commented on the invaluable lessons learned in Charleston Latin. Those who have gone on to study the classics have a solid base in vocabulary and culture, giving those students definite advantage.
Beyond all this is the fact that students thoroughly enjoy Charleston Latin. The stories, myths, anecdotes, songs, plays and general discovery of this rich language and culture, lead the Stella students to deep understanding of language, vocabulary and history.
